Hiring Process

Summer Associate Candidates
We look for candidates with the intellect, creativity, skills, and commitment needed to provide our clients with the high quality and effective service they have come to expect from Hogan & Hartson. Although we seek candidates who have performed well academically, we also value other evidence of important qualities such as leadership, judgment, motivation, teamwork, communication skills, and contribution to the community. We work hard to identify and hire well-rounded individuals with whom clients and colleagues will enjoy working.

The Washington, D.C. office does hire a limited number of first year law students. In all other U.S. offices, candidates must complete at least two full years of law school to be eligible for our summer associate program.

Requesting an On-campus Interview
Please contact your law school's career services or placement office to sign up for an on-campus interview. If you attend a school where the firm is not interviewing, please contact us.

After the On-campus Interview
Students who interview with us on-campus can expect to hear from us within about a week of their on-campus interview. Campus interviewers call candidates who have been selected for additional interviews at the firm. Letters are sent to candidates not selected for additional interviews shortly thereafter.

Call-back Interviews
Candidates who visit the firm for call back interviews can expect to meet with at least four of our lawyers. The interviews generally last half a day; morning interviews typically conclude with a lunch at an area restaurant with two of our more junior associates. We attempt to introduce candidates to a diverse group of partners and associates who practice in different practice areas. Generally, one or more members of our Recruitment Committee is included on each interview schedule.

Call back candidates normally are contacted within two weeks of their in-office interview.

Splitting Summers With Other Firms, Government Bodies, and Nonprofits
We typically allow summer associates to split their summer between Hogan & Hartson and other employers, but we highly recommend that summer associates spend their entire summer at the firm in order to benefit fully from the opportunities provided by the summer program. If a student decides to split his or her summer between Hogan & Hartson and another organization, the student must spend a minimum of seven weeks at the firm in the first half of the summer.

Splitting Summers Between Hogan & Hartson Offices
Summer associates generally do not split their time between different offices. Occasionally, a summer associate has a serious interest in another office and may have an opportunity to spend time in different Hogan & Hartson offices, if the firm's staffing needs support it.

Offers of Regular Associate Employment
Our objective is to make offers of regular associate employment to all qualified summer associates, and we recruit with the goal of bringing in summer associate classes full of qualified candidates. All determinations regarding offers for first year associate positions are made after the summer associate program has ended. Offer decisions are typically communicated before Labor Day.
