Hogan & Hartson was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1904 by Frank Hogan, who was widely recognized during his professional career as America's leading trial lawyer.

Over the past 20 years, Hogan & Hartson has expanded to major cities throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Each of the firm's 21 other offices has been established to serve the diverse needs of a new, growing client base in a particular region. Throughout this expansion, the Washington, D.C. office has served as a natural base for the firm's national and international practice. Today, the Washington, D.C. office has close to 500 lawyers who represent clients all over the world in nearly every area of the law.

Located within a few short blocks of the White House and influential governmental agencies, Hogan & Hartson is distinguished by its combination of more than 90 years of institutional experience in U.S. federal law, involving dealing with the federal courts, departments, agencies, and U.S. Congress, with an equally significant corporate, commercial, and tax practice that is national and international in scope.

The office also prides itself on its strong commitment to pro bono representation; over 35 years ago, Hogan & Hartson became the first major firm in the United States to establish a separate practice group devoted exclusively to providing pro bono legal services. Since its inception in 1970, our Community Services Department has been charged with attracting and staffing both high-profile matters raising issues of public importance, as well as smaller cases addressing individual problems. Although a few firms have followed our model in recent years, we believe our Community Services Department remains the finest institutionalization of pro bono commitment in the United States.
